Scottish
Traditional Boat Festival 2005 at Portsoy
21st - 26th June 2005 One of our key long-term objectives is to increase the "come and do" opportunities at the Festival. In 2004 we carried out a hugely successful programme of music master classes in a local school, and this year we also want to create a similar initiative for children and young people with boat and craft building and sailing. Coracle Building and sailing: Children will be tutored by Dave Purvis ("Coracle Dave") in the ancient science of coracle building and sailing. Visitors will be able to watch Jane Wilkinson make a full size Spey Coracle: a unique design which was woven from wicker and then covered in cow hide. SPLASH Dinghies will be returning to Portsoy for the weekend of the Festival In 2004 they put 70 plus children through basic sailing experience and were delighted at the very positive response they got.Working with James Crombie, we are planning to help a group of children build dinghies which they will sail at the Festival. Other than the SPLASH activity, all of the above is planned to take place over the weekend preceding the Festival. Do please get in touch with us on any thoughts you might have on how we can extend this programme for children and young people. We really do see the Festival as a great "vehicle" to get kids on water: We have reserved the services of the RYA Scotland They have been booked to come to Portsoy with their six boats and six instructors to provide sailing taster sessions and then Stage 1 and 2 Courses, all designed for children between 8 and 14. Please let us know how you think we might be able to make this programme even more effective.
