Netting the River Severn

Salmon and Sea trout netting was practised on the river Severn by a different technique than used in South Wales, only one coracle was used. The net was about four feet deep and unusually double armoured unlike the traditional single armoured type still used in Wales. Cork floats and a footrope of weighted horsehair suspended the long net in the water. The technique was to peg one end of the net to the bank then the coracle man would paddle across the river one handed while casting the net from the coracle. He would return to the same bank and the net would be set in a semi-circle with the coracle man within the netted area who then used a beating pole that resembled a broomstick with a leather disk on one end. The pole was plunged in the water to scare any fish into the net. The fish would swim through the first wall of armouring, (large mesh) into the smaller mesh that was pushed through the other outer large mesh and the fish was caught like "a rabbit in a purse net". Net fishing was made illegal on the River Severn by an act of Parliament in 1923.

In South Wales the fishing net is dragged between two coracles and is a large meshed front tied to a bag, which bellows as the net is towed. On the bottom line lead weights keep it underwater while on the Towy cork floats are on the top line. On the Teifi hemp was traditionally used for the mesh while on the Towy linen was prefered as was lines made from cow tail hair. Horsetail hair ropes were the norm on the Teifi with the rings made from cow horn but today man made fibres are mostly used. Netting on the river Conwy was carried out by two netsmen one paddling while the other sat next to him but facing backwards while casting the net behind.
