Coracle ‘boat’ Weekend Workshop at Flag Fen (Peterbrough)
18th - 19th June 2005

A coracle is a river going vessel that has been used since primitive times. They are made by hand with a wooden basket-like frame and are traditionally covered with animal hide, but more recently in canvas or synthetic materials coated with bitumen or tar to make them waterproof. Generally British coracles carry a single person and are light enough to be carried on a persons back for transportation. Most primitive cultures have their own version of the coracle; all are similar with their shallow basket frames made from locally produced materials. The ones made at Flag Fen on this weekend will be based on the circular Ironbridge style.

Cost: £190

Three Mills Boat Rally at Bromley-By-Bow (East London)
9th-10th July 2005

Coracles will be taking to the water again, at the Three Mills Boat Rally, on 9/10 July.

(This is the fifth year that coracles have taken part; I believe we're the only rally in the London area where coracling has regularly taken place. At present, a Severn coracle and a Teifi coracle are lined up.)

If any of your members would wish to take part, we would be very pleased to hear from them.
Should you wish to mention this in your diary of events, please feel free.

The exact location is at Three Mills, Bromley-by-Bow, East London.
The mills date from the 18th century, and are Britain's largest tide mills).

Best wishes, Roger Wilkinson

Ironbridge Coracle Regatta
29th August 2005

Coraclers welcome to attend
Attracting coracle makers and paddlers from all over Britain to participate in races, madcap team games and fiercely contended competitions, along the picturesque stretch of the River Severn at Dale End Park, Ironbridge.

There will be a relay race for local businesses, in which the first team member has to cross the river, and change places with the next member of the team - guaranteed to be entertaining!
Also a session for first timers willing to take to the water and risk the possibility of getting very wet, courtesy of a limited number of traditional, handmade coracles, produced by The Green Wood Centre charity, available free of charge for use during the event (life jackets also supplied). Those who prefer to watch while others make a splash will also be able to enjoy an array of craft and food stalls, as well as a beer tent and barbecue.

The 10th Annual Coracle Regatta at the village of Leintwardine on the River Teme in the County of Shropshire
Saturday 21st June 2003 - Leintwardine

On Saturday the 21st of June 2003 at the village of Leintwardine in the county of Shropshire the annual coracle races were held. The host for the event was coracle maker and village resident Peter Faulkner the only maker to specialise in hide covered coracles. The sunshine attracted many visitors to the river that was also the lowest that anyone could remember since the races began ten years earlier although very recently when the river was in spate twenty eight salmon were counted jumping the wier adjacent the bridge on one day. Participents in the event were also down and had been since the event was relocated away from the village two years ago because of precautions relating to the outbreak of the foot and mouth cattle disease in other parts of the country at that time. Many bowl coracles (also known as the "Ironbridge") were seen this year and as every year they were the ones that tipped their occupents in the river. With well over a dozen types to choose from it is surprising that this type is so prevelant considering that the type is unstable and also worrying that many newcomers to coracles begin in this unsafe design of coracle. Various classes of race were held and also water polo. Conwy on the river bank explained to the visitors the use of a traditional coracle net and displayed a River Teifi net he had made from the traditional materials of horse hair, hemp twine and cowhorn.
